Managing Leaf Fall

Through Winter

Falling leaves throughout Autumn and Winter can be a constant job and a major headache, keeping paths, steps, decks and lawns clear.  They do look beautiful at first fall, however as they decay they are inclined to become very wet and slippery creating what can be a serious safety hazard.  Outdoor steps, stairways and paths really need to be kept clear of leaves.  Also, if leaves are allowed to sit on timber decks they can create the right conditions for rot to set into the decking.

The quickest, most efficient way to manage problem leaves is with a leaf blower.  These blowers enable you to easily corral the leaves for collection.  However, if you’re going to get a leaf blower make sure it’s a rechargeable battery operated one and not one that is fuel-powered as they are really terrible for the environment.  Their fumes are much worse in total emissions than cars and trucks.

The reason leaf blowers and related devices are so dirty is because many use two-stroke engines.  Their pollutants contribute to a variety of health problems and cause smog, acid rain and a host of other environmental problems. Switching to electric alternatives can drastically reduce the number of toxic pollutants directly released into the air that we all breathe.

Of course, you can always collect your falling leaves the old-fashioned way by using a rake and raking them up, while getting some great exercise at the same time.  Much better for you and the environment!  Be sure to compost your leaves over winter or add them to garden beds as mulch.  Rather than collecting leaves off the lawn, you could always mow over the fallen leaves, as they provide protective and nutrient-rich mulch for your lawn too!
