DARLING POINT
Residential Landscape Garden DESIGN PROJECT
_
A north-facing harbourside garden, re-imagined with clarity and restraint. The existing pool remained — a fixed architectural element — while the surrounding landscape was completely redesigned. The intent was to create a garden with European sophistication: structured, composed, and enduring, yet softened with movement and textural contrast.
The design language is built on balance. Strong architectural planting establishes order, while looser, more expressive species introduce rhythm and softness. Vertical punctuation comes from Pencil Pines, their narrow, upright forms creating repetition and visual cadence along the boundaries. They provide height, definition, and a sense of permanence.
In contrast, palms introduce fluidity. Dwarf Date Palms and European Fan Palms offer sculptural mid-storey layering, their fronds filtering light and casting movement across stone and lawn. The interplay between the tailored formality of the pines and the relaxed gesture of the palms defines the spatial experience — masculine structure offset by feminine flow.
The planting palette is restrained and tonal. Olive trees anchor the scheme with silvery foliage and Mediterranean character. Plum Yew provides evergreen density and a refined backdrop in shaded zones. Bougainvillea is used strategically for controlled bursts of colour, climbing and softening hard edges. Natal Plum contributes glossy foliage and subtle flowering structure, while Elephant Ears introduce bold leaf scale to contrast the finer textures throughout.
A contemporary outdoor setting is positioned on a teardrop-shaped platform of softly finished natural stone. The form is deliberate — organic yet precise — creating a visual counterpoint to the straight-lined architecture of the pool and residence. It reads as a sculptural element within the landscape rather than simply a paved area.
An expansive lawn extends from the terrace, offering spatial relief and visual luxury within the context of apartment living. The uninterrupted green surface enhances light reflection, amplifies the sense of openness, and provides functional flexibility without compromising refinement.
To establish immediate presence, mature specimens were craned into position during installation. Their scale and patina lend authenticity and gravitas, ensuring the garden feels settled from inception rather than newly planted.
