Pachypodium

Madagascar Palm

Pachypodium is a type of slow-growing succulent native to Madagascar and Africa.  It has a spine-bearing trunk that stores water and gives the plant structure and strength. The leaves sprout out of and around the crown of the tree. It’s a striking and quirky plant.

This is a sun-loving plant that puts out all their new growth in the summer months.  Water liberally whenever the soil dries out, especially when contained in a pot, and this plant looks great growing in a pot.

Do note that all parts of the Pachypodium contain a latex sap that is poisonous.  Something to keep in mind if you have pets, although the hooked, sharp spines along its trunk would deter even the most curious dog or cat.
