Modern House Numbers

MUD X Frost

House numbers are like the full stop in a sentence, they are the finishing touch on a beautiful home and garden.  Details are so important. Mud Australia has collaborated with Vince Frost to create some yummy typography porcelain numbers.

Combining numerical interpretation with porcelain, the Numbers intersect design and art, while also offering an alternative to the standard industrial metal and tile solutions.  The result is a fun, eye-catching graphic font with strong architectural qualities.

The font has been interpreted by the Mud team and hand carved into plaster moulds for porcelain slip-casting. Carbon neutral and handmade in Sydney, each Number is made to order and comes in two sizes in all 19 signature Mud Australia colours, plus unglazed zero-waste recycled clay.

I’ve always loved Mud products. The material and colour palette are beautiful, and we thought it would be really cool to make house numbers with Mud Australia porcelain. Normally the sign forms we design at Frost*collective are limited to commercial projects. I wanted to instigate a signage system we could make available to everyone. The font needed to be rounded, as is the nature of Mud Australia’s design aesthetic. What we’ve created has depth and is personalised. Actually, they remind me of jelly babies

Mud Australia Founder and Creative Director, Shelley Simpson, says, “No matter where you live, what you see when approaching your entryway should make you feel happy you’re home.  Partnering with Vince gave us the opportunity to create a bold and beautiful design while retaining the minimalist aesthetic and functional design ethos Mud Australia is well-known for.

The collaborators met when Vince interviewed Shelley for his Design Your Life podcast during the dark days of Covid.  After subsequent meetings, they knew they wanted to create something together.

Each number is mounted on stainless steel to create an elegant 2mm shadow-line and can be either glued flush or mounted with a 13mm standoff.  The Numbers can be applied to a wide variety of surfaces, including weatherboard, brick, and concrete.
