Changing the Way We Live

Could you imagine living in a house that grows its own food?  Picture solving the world’s biggest problems simply by changing the way we live.

This is the passion of visionary environmental campaigner and floral artist, Joost Bakker, who was once dubbed the ‘Poster Boy of Zero Waste Living’ by The New York Times.

Joost along with Chefs Matt Stone & Jo Barrett began a live experiment building a tiny 87 square metre home and urban farm in Melbourne’s Federation Square where this experiment has been live for 652 days and counting.  When the project launched Matt and Jo left their usual posts at Oakridge winery and moved in to cook and serve only what they could grow on-site (and that was plenty!).  The pair have since moved on but the Future Food System experiment which began with Joost’s brilliant concept and design to Matt and Jo’s daily job of maintaining, harvesting, cooking and hosting the small, intimate dinners has been well documented in a new film by Madman Films.

The team at ARD went along to see the film at the Randwick Ritz on Monday night and listen to a panel discussion between Joost, Sarah Wilson and Damon Gameau. We all left feeling incredibly inspired and our heads full of ideas! A great ‘take away’ was, ‘you don’t have to do it all, just take a few of the ideas from the documentary to make a change’.

Do yourself a favour and find the film while it’s currently showing or organise to host a screening for your community.
