Red Pokers

Hakea Bucculenta

Hakea bucculenta is commonly known as ‘red pokers’ and is a large evergreen shrub in the family Proteaceae, which is endemic to Western Australia.  This is a spectacular ornamental shrub with red or orange flowers that emerge as erect, cone-like blooms in leaf axils for an extended period of time, May – November.  One of the most colourful and distinctive native plants with upright, narrow grassy-like leaves.  They grow to approximately 1.5 – 4 m tall.  Birds and bees love their flowers and good drainage soil is essential and a position in full sun produces best flowering and a compact habit, whereas growth in shade ha a tendency to be sparse with poor flowering.  H. bucculenta is an excellent feature plant in any garden.

Hakea fracisiana is commonly known as ‘pink pokers’ is very similar to the above but produces flowers that start out green and transform to a fantastic pink in Spring. Both plants prefer a native specific fertiliser.
