A Sobering Message

From Sir David Attenborough

One man has seen more of the natural world than many others – at 94 years of age, Sir David Attenborough has presented us with his Witness Statement and Vision for the Future - David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet.

Produced by award-winning wildlife filmmakers Silverback Films and global environmental organisation WWF, this unique feature documentary can be watched right now on Netflix.

The film is sobering and sad to watch and addresses the biggest challenges facing life on our planet – yet it’s not all grim as Sir David also spells out a powerful message of hope for future generations and tells us what we need to do in haste to turn the tide.

We live our comfortable lives in the shadow of a disaster of our own making.
— Sir David Attenborough

"That disaster is being brought about by the very things that allow us to live our comfortable lives. And it's quite natural to carry on in this way until there's a convincing reason not to do so, and a very good plan for an alternative.

"The natural world is fading. The evidence is all around, it's happened during my lifetime. I have seen it with my own eyes, it will lead to our destruction." – Sir David Attenborough

Humans cut down over 15 billion trees each year.  Half of all fertile land on Earth is now used for farming. Sir David says we need to “re-wild the planet” to increase biodiversity again. He predicts pollinating insects will disappear otherwise,  and the weather will become more and more unpredictable. He says, if we act now by halting the growth in the world’s population, stop eating meat and create no-fishing zones, the natural world will begin to repair and thrive again.

His most urgent message is for us to realise that we are ‘part’ of nature and not separate from it.  We cannot ignore the warning signs from nature anymore.  The solutions already exist, and Sir David shares his vision for the future in the film, however, it is now imperative and critical, for our own survival, that we embrace them.
